Lieutenant Colonel Brownfield enlisted into active military service in 1977 as an enlisted soldier at the rank of private E-1 and joined the Illinois Army National Guard in 1981 after serving 3 1/2 years on active duty. His first tour of duty with the Illinois Army National Guard was with the 106 aviation previously known as the 1903rd third aviation company located at Midway airport in Chicago IL, he held positions such as general helicopter mechanic and crew chief for the OH58 and UH-1 helicopter. Lieutenant Colonel Brownfield assumed duties as the Director for Force Structure Division, G-8 at U.S Army Space and Missile Defense Command in August 2019. His previous assignments include, the 1744 Transportation Company in the Illinois Army National Guard, where he served as the 2nd platoon leader, he was later called to serve his country and deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm / Desert Shield with the 1544th Transportation, ILARNG Paris, IL as the 1st Platoon managing twelve 5-ton trucks and eight Line Haul vehicles. While deployed he was temporarily reassigned to the 43rd Group's as the only Movement Control Officer group for 216 pieces of transportation assets. After the Gulf war he returned to assume command of the 1744 Transportation Company 1991 which deactivated in September 1992. He was then handpicked to command of A Battery 2/202 Air Defense Artillery which absorbed the personnel of the 1744 Transportation Company and transitioned the Soldiers into becoming air Defenders: Stinger Gunners. Lieutenant Colonel Brownfield received his branch transfer to Air Defense Artillery in 1993. Follow on assignments were commander of C Battery 2/202 Air Defense Battalion, S-4 HQ’s 2/202 Air Defense Artillery, Assistant to the training Assistant Administrator as the Overseas Deployment Training Officer for the State of Illinois, Instructor/TAC Officer for the Regional Training Institute Springfield IL, Commander of H battery 202 air defense enhanced battery to be enhanced 256 mechanized infantry brigade host nation liaison officer for the 33rd area support group 38th Rear Area Operations Center (ROC) Assistant Operations Officer and one of the original 4 project officers for the Lincoln’s Challenge Academy. Upon the 911 attacks Lieutenant Colonel Brownfield return to active duty through the Army National Guard and Reserve Program (AGR) and served in the following assignments: Chief of Plans, Chief of Operations 2nd Brigade 85th Division, Fort McCoy WI; Mobilization Assistant Team Chief, DPTMS Fort McCoy WI; Executive Officer, Force Management Directorate, DCS G-3/5/7 Army National Guard Bureau; Branch Chief Army Force Generation DCS G-3/5/7 Army National Guard Bureau; Requirements Officer Capabilities and Integration Directorate; DCS G-3/5/7 HQDA Pentagon; Army Advisor to the Ministry of Defense Force Management Directorate (M9) for the Iraqi Joint HQ’s Office of Operations and the Director of the Regional Guard Brigade, Force Integration Officer, Force Management Directorate, DCS G-3/5/7 HQDA Pentagon; Chief Operations Branch, DCS G-8 HQDA Pentagon, Chief Force Management Branch, First Army Rock Island, IL. Lieutenant Colonel Brownfield is a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University where he received a Bachelor of Arts, discipline in Sociology. He received his ROTC commission from the University at Chicago. His military education includes the Transportation Officer Basic Course, Air Defense Artillery Officer Advanced Course, Small Group Instructor Training Course, Battle Focus Training Course, Senior Tactical (TAC) Training Course, Command General Staff College, and the Army Force Management School. Lieutenant Colonel Brownfield’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award), Amy Commendation Medal (4th Award), Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (5th Award), National Defense Service Medal, SouthWest Asia Service Medal w/3 Bronze Service Stars, Humanitarian Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal w/Campaign Star, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, USAF Aircrew Member Badge, Army Staff Identification Badge He and his wife Madeline, have been married for twenty-eight years and they have three children: their daughter Breana two son’s Brandon and Russell III along with Jordan his dearest nephew.
